Striving For Execllence
By: Captain Scott Nengel, Training Officer
Striving For Excellence! This powerful statement says a lot about
our career and volunteer firefighters. They work hard each day to
improve our organization and that is accomplished through their
continuous training in the fire and rescue services that we provide. Improvements in our organization is also evident as it establishes
and implements new standard operating procedures, purchases
new equipment to support our fire and rescue operations, and works
"outside the box" to make a positive impact on our community. The
Training Division must maintain the highest level of proficiency in accordance with standards and criteria established at the federal,
state and local level. The Training Division has the responsibility to
monitor these changing requirements, and implement training
activities to ensure the department is well prepared.

Our firefighters are faced with many challenges. In order to meet
those challenges, each firefighter spends an average of 300 - 400
hours per year in training programs to learn new skills and keep
previously learned skills sharp. While our number of emergency
responses continue to grow each year, actual loss in dollars due to
fire remain low. This is due in part to the fire district's commitment
to fire prevention and education. "It is the mission of the
Antonia Fire Protection District Training Division to provide the
highest quality and most progressive education and training to
ensure our personnel can safely and effectively deliver exceptional
service in all risk-related disciplines."  This is necessary to ensure a competent, efficient and effective emergency response organization.

Training starts with the recruit probationary firefighter to the skilled
veteran firefighter with such items like firefighting tactics and
strategies, specialized technical rescue training, emergency
medical medicine, hazardous materials, and much more. This
mission is completed both through in-house and outside training
that is required for our firefighters who operate in all types of
hazardous environments. The role the fire district plays in the
community is ever growing and ever changing. The Antonia Fire
Protection District Training Division's overall goal is to provide our
highly qualified firefighters with the training necessary to do their job
safely and efficiently while carrying out the fire district's mission in
order to enhance the highest degree of service to the community.
